Israel works to release its own, foreign citizens taken hostage — president

Meanwhile, the Russian embassy has yet to establish the whereabouts of two Russian hostages in the Gaza Strip

TEL AVIV, October 24. /TASS/. Israel treats its own citizens and foreign nationals being kept hostage equally as it has been working to release them, Israeli President Isaac Herzog French told visiting French President Emmanuel Macron.

"I know you met families of hijacked and kidnapped people. And I know that you share with me the same feeling that there is no difference, none at all, <…> between an Israeli citizen and anyone who holds another citizenship. All Israelis are one <…>, and we want them back immediately," the Israeli president insisted.

Meanwhile, the Russian embassy has yet to establish the whereabouts of two Russian hostages in the Gaza Strip, Russian Ambassador to Israel Anatoly Viktorov told Rossiya 24 television as he said Moscow was actively working toward a solution.

According to the Russian diplomat, the number of Russian and CIS nationals seeking to be evacuated has remained the same and stands at 1,000 people. "We are ready. All decisions have been made already <…>. But, unfortunately, it all comes down to the border crossing between Gaza and Egypt operating one way only," Viktorov said.

The Russian embassy in Israel told TASS last week that at least two Russian nationals had been taken hostage.

Tensions in the Middle East flared up again on October 7 when Hamas militants launched a surprise incursion into Israeli territory from the Gaza Strip. The Palestinian movement described its attack as a response to the aggressive actions of Israeli authorities against the Al-Aqsa Mosque on the Temple Mount in Jerusalem’s Old City. Israel declared a total siege of Gaza and started carrying out strikes on the Palestinian enclave, as well as on certain areas in Lebanon and Syria. Clashes are also taking place in the West Bank.
