Global tensions create risk of violent resolution of conflicts, Belarusian president says

According to Alexander Lukashenko, increased military spending across the world and the dismantling of the arms control system cause particular concern

MINSK, September 16. /TASS/. Mounting global tensions create the risk that military force will be used to resolve conflicts, Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko said at a meeting of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) Collective Security Council in Dushanbe.

"Unfortunately, we have to admit that the global situation has not improved this year, the principles and norms of international law continue to be blatantly ignored. The boundaries of regional instability are expanding. Global tensions create the risk that attempts will be made to resolve conflicts by force," the BelTA news agency quoted Lukashenko as saying.

According to him, increased military spending across the world and the dismantling of the arms control system cause particular concern. "The Treaty on Open Skies is collapsing before our very eyes, just like the Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty, which, in fact, is the last remaining agreement in this field," the Belarusian president pointed out. "The lack of a constructive agenda for arms limitation does not add optimism and keeps military and political tensions high," Lukashenko added.
