Sputnik Light approved for use in pregnant and breastfeeding women — guidelines

Apart from that, clinical data on the use of the vaccine in breastfeeding women and infants are lacking

MOSCOW, March 25. /TASS/. Russia’s Sputnik Light one-dose coronavirus vaccine can be used in pregnant and breastfeeding women, but risks are to be taken into account, according to the updated vaccine administration guidelines released on Friday.

Thus, according to the document, pregnancy and breastfeeding have been excluded from the list of contra-indications.

"Tests on animals indicate the absence of reproductive toxicity and teratogenicity. No clinical tests of Sputnik Light in pregnant women have been conducted. It means that Sputnik Light can be used in pregnant women in cases when expected benefits for the mother exceed potential risks to the fetus starting from the 22nd week of pregnancy," the text reads.

Apart from that, clinical data on the use of the vaccine in breastfeeding women and infants are lacking too. "It is unknown now whether the vaccine’s active substances could get into the mother’s milk. Before using the vaccine in a nursing woman, it is necessary to assess the risks and benefits of this vaccine," the document says.
