MOSCOW, April 22. /TASS/. The world’s first successful combined transplantation of the lungs and liver in a child with cystic fibrosis has been performed at the V.I. Shumakov Medical Research Center in Moscow, the center’s chief, Sergei Gotie, told a news conference on Monday.
"I am pleased to present a unique clinical observation, which is the first not only in Russia, but in the world, too - the first successful combined transplantation of three organs performed in a child," Gotie said.
The Shumakov Center’s press-service said the nine-year-old patient, Mikhail, from a village in Sakhalin, was diagnosed with the cystic fibrosis - a genetic disorder that affects several organs at a time, lungs in the first place. Also, the boy had liver cirrhosis.
Health Minister Veronika Skvortsova told the conference the Shumakov Center was the leading research and methodological center in the field of transplant surgery and organ and tissue donation.
