HAIKOU /China/, August 26. /TASS/. The key stage of the project to establish the Wenchang Aerospace Supercomputing Centre in the northeast of Hainan Island has been fully completed, the Nanguo Metropolis Daily reported.
According to the newspaper, all technical, auxiliary and service facilities of the center, which belongs to Hainan Shiny-Day Group, are ready for operation. Investments in the establishment of the center, the area of which exceeds 20 thousand square meters, amounted to 1.2 billion yuan (more than $166 million at current exchange rates).
This research facility will work closely with research organizations, universities, commercial enterprises and government agencies. It will be responsible for providing services in high-performance and cloud computing, big databases and artificial intelligence.
Establishing such a high-tech data processing site in Wenchang will be an important boost to the development of the local aerospace industry, the company operating the supercomputer center said. The facility is expected to serve not only Chinese but also foreign partners.
Hainan Space Cluster
The Wenchang International Aerospace City was established in October 2019, about three years after the launch of the nearby spaceport. Geographically, the facility, which covers an area of 42 square kilometers, consists of two zones about 15 kilometers apart. One of them is adjacent to the launch sites, the other is a science city, where an advanced scientific and industrial cluster is being formed on the basis of high-tech companies.
Six Tianzhou cargo spacecraft, the Tianhe core module of the Chinese orbital station, the Wentian and Mengtian laboratory modules, the Mars probe Tianwen-1, and the unmanned lunar exploration vehicle Chang'e-5 were launched from the provincial spaceport. China has also put many satellites into orbit using Wenchang.
