About 50 tons of radioactive waste stored at Zaporozhye NPP — Rosenergoatom

A strike on the dry cask storage would cause background radiation, Rosenergoatom CEO advisor Renat Karchaa said

MOSCOW, October 26. /TASS/. The amount of radioactive material in the Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant’s dry cask storage stands at 50 tons, Rosenergoatom CEO advisor Renat Karchaa said Tuesday.

"There are, mind you, 50 tons of radioactive material," he said on Russian TV.

A strike on the dry cask storage would cause background radiation, Karchaa noted, adding that, because of the sheer amount of radioactive material in storage, it would be a "strong background."

The Zaporozhye NPP is the largest operational nuclear power plant in Europe. Russia took control of itl on February 28, during the first days of the special military operation in Ukraine. On September 11, the last operational ZNPP reactor unit was shut down. The reactors were shut down due to the actions of Ukrainian forces who deliberately targeted its power lines. On October 11, Karchaa announced that the power supply to the ZNPP was restored.

On October 5, Russian President Vladimir Putin transferred the ZNPP atomic energy facilities into federal ownership. He also ordered the establishment of a state enterprise to manage the NPP. On October 14, Energodar mayor Alexander Volga told TASS that the ZNPP has switched to Russian operation standards.
