Russian diplomat dismisses idea of creating new global body to replace UN

According to Kirill Logvinov, such an organization cannot be founded because a broad consensus like the one that formed after World War II and that was enshrined in the UN Charter is unlikely to be reached either now or in the future

ST. PETERSBURG, May 19. /TASS/. It would be impossible to create a new global body that takes the place of the UN, a high-ranking Russian foreign ministry official said.

"Proponents of the 'collapse theory' argue that the global body (the United Nations, or UN - TASS) stemming from Yalta’s (the Yalta Conference of 1945 - TASS) legacy has become outdated, no longer able to respond to present-day challenges and threats. So, it should be replaced with something new," Kirill Logvinov, director of the ministry’s international organizations department, told the St. Petersburg International Legal Forum.

"But let me be clear: eighty years after the founding of the UN, it would be impossible to create a new organization that is equally universal in its nature, functions, and legitimacy," he emphasized.

According to the Russian diplomat, such an organization cannot be founded because a broad consensus like the one that formed after World War II and that was enshrined in the UN Charter is unlikely to be reached either now or in the future. "I don’t think that anyone really wants to dismantle the United Nations. But supporters of this theory will surely try to paint this global organization as being 'on thin ice.' By doing this, they can blackmail those who are interested in preserving the United Nations while pursuing their own selfish goals," Logvinov said.
