Russia and Arab countries call on Israel to join Non-Proliferation Treaty

The meeting participants expressed support "for all efforts aimed at nuclear disarmament and preventing proliferation of nuclear weapons without prejudice to the inalienable right of State parties to the NPT to exploit peaceful uses of nuclear energy"

MARRAKECH, December 21. /TASS/. The foreign ministers of Russia and the Arab states called on Israel to join the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT), according to the joint statement of the 6th session of the Russian-Arab Cooperation Forum (RAFC), which was held in Marrakesh.

"[The ministers] call upon Israel, and other non-adherent States, to rapidly accede to the treaty as non-nuclear States, in addition to emphasize support for all efforts aimed at achieving the ultimate goal of a world free of all weapons of mass destruction," the document says.

The meeting participants also expressed support "for all efforts aimed at nuclear disarmament and preventing proliferation of nuclear weapons without prejudice to the inalienable right of State parties to the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) to exploit peaceful uses of nuclear energy."

The 6th session of the RAFC was attended by Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, heads of foreign affairs agencies of Bahrain, Egypt, Yemen, Lebanon, Mauritania, Morocco, Palestine and Sudan.
