China’s initiative on Ukraine in tune with Russia’s approach — ambassador to Beijing

"We share the principle of adherence to the UN Charter and support China’s position on the illegitimacy of the unilateral sanctions adopted in circumvention of the UN Security Council," the ambassador added

BEIJING, March 4. /TASS/. Most of China’s proposals for the political solution to the Ukraine crisis echo Russia’s approaches, Ambassador to Beijing Igor Morgulov said in an interview with China Central Television, which was published by the Russian embassy to China on its Telegram channel on Saturday.

"We welcome China’s willingness to contribute to the peaceful resolution of the conflict. We are closely examining the provisions, and most of them are in tune with our standpoint," Morgulov said.

"We share the principle of adherence to the UN Charter and support China’s position on the illegitimacy of the unilateral sanctions adopted in circumvention of the UN Security Council," the ambassador added.

On February 24, the Chinese Foreign Ministry published a position paper on the political resolution of the Ukraine crisis. It consists of 12 points, including calls for a ceasefire, respect for the legitimate interests of all countries in the field of security, settlement of the humanitarian crisis in Ukraine, the exchange of prisoners of war between Moscow and Kiev, as well as the avoidance of unilateral sanctions without a corresponding decision of the UN Security Council.

In the document China described dialogue and negotiations as "the only way of resolving the crisis in Ukraine" and called on all parties to support Moscow and Kiev in "moving towards each other", as well as in the early resumption of a direct dialogue. It is emphasized that the world community should create conditions and provide a venue for the talks to be resumed.
