Russia to keep close tabs on Germany’s potential military buildup, diplomat says

Official Berlin has set course for the country’s accelerated militarization, Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova noted

MOSCOW, June 3. /TASS/. Russia will keep a close eye on Germany’s potential military buildup and Berlin’s compliance with its international commitments, Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said on Friday.

"We will keep a close watch on the announced rearmament and potential increase in Germany’s troop numbers, considering its existing international legal commitments of restraint in the military sphere," the Russian diplomat said.

Moscow perceives the German chancellor’s statement that Germany will soon have Europe’s largest army among NATO member states as "yet more proof that official Berlin has set course for the country’s accelerated militarization," Zakharova pointed out.

"Unfortunately, it is well-known from history how this may end," the Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman said.
