HAIKOU /China/, August 9. /TASS/. Agricultural enterprises in Sanya, a city in the southern Chinese province of Hainan, are constantly expanding the variety of fruits grown on the island, including rare crops, Hainan Ribao reported.

According to the newspaper, the Sanya authorities are encouraging local producers and expect to increase the value of the harvest of "unusual and high-quality" tropical products by over 100 million yuan ($14 million) in the third quarter compared to July-September 2024. The newspaper cites the custard apple, a heart-shaped fruit tastes like crème brûlée, as an example of an exotic fruit in high demand.

Hainan Ribao specified that many Sanya departments are working to increase the city's fruit diversity. Local breeding organizations are introducing innovations to create new, promising products. At the same time, sought-after production and supply chains are forming. The city is constantly expanding the area allocated for growing new varieties of exotic fruits, with durian and dragon fruit plantations occupying a significant part of this territory.

Sanya actively imports seedlings of trees that grow in southern latitudes. According to official data, the city has purchased an additional 264 fruit-bearing varieties since 2015.

Mango is one of the most sought-after fruits, and nearly 29,000 hectares have been allocated for its cultivation in Sanya. The city also offers premium papayas, passion fruits, pineapples, and marangs. To ensure stable development and increase the efficiency of this agricultural sector, the government has partnered with several insurance companies.

The Sanya Agriculture and Rural Affairs Bureau reported that projects are underway to develop new food products using advanced fruit processing methods. Meanwhile, crop production has been integrated with the tourism industry, significantly increasing farmers' incomes. In the near future, the focus on innovation and large-scale production is expected to further advance the highly efficient development of the local modern tropical agricultural sector.
