Central Bank sees circulation of counterfeit money down a third in Russia in Q3 2023

It is reported that the largest number of counterfeit notes was found in the Central Federal District

MOSCOW, October 25. /TASS/. The amount of counterfeit money detected in the Russian banking system plummeted by 31% in the third quarter of this year in annual terms to 3,100, the Bank of Russia said.

"In the third quarter of 2023, 3,106 counterfeit notes of the Bank of Russia were found in the banking system of the Russian Federation, which is 31.21% lower than in the like period of 2022 (4,515)," the regulator said.

According to the Bank of Russia, 2,284 fake 5,000-ruble notes, 570 fake 1,000 -ruble notes, and 140 fake 2,000-ruble notes were found in the reporting period. The number of 10-ruble counterfeit notes was the lowest, just one of them had been found. At the same time, forty five forged 10-ruble coins and twenty one forged 5-ruble coins were found.

The largest number of counterfeit notes was found in the Central Federal District.

In total, 510 fake foreign banknotes were found in the third quarter of 2023, including 291 in July, 110 in August and 109 in September. Counterfeit US dollars made up the majority (428). Eighty counterfeit euro notes, one fake yuan notes, and one fake UAE dirham were also found.
