SANYA, May 27. /TASS/. Municipal authorities of the Chinese city of Sanya (Hainan province, South China) established a special environmental protection organization. This was reported by the Sanya Daily newspaper.
The commission for the establishment of an ecological civilization will consist of nine thematic working groups, it said. The organization will develop policies in the field of environmental protection, identify environmental risks and deal with other issues in this sphere.
The city authorities have tightened control over river and water body pollution to ensure the purity of water resources, which are used by the population, industrial enterprises and in agriculture. According to Gu Guangye, secretary of the party commission of the city's environmental protection department, the municipal authorities intend to speed up the construction of sewage treatment plants and the infrastructure needed to dispose of waste. The resort should become a pilot zone for an "ecological civilization" at a national level.
According to the representative of the department, coordination mechanisms for environmental protection of natural resources are being created between regional authorities. As an example of such cooperation, he cited the cooperation between Sanya City and Baoting Li and Miao Autonomous County to protect the Tengqiao and Ningyuan Rivers, as well as the Chitian Reservoir, which serves as an important source of drinking water for the resort. The city authorities ordered to dismantle a breakwater near the fashionable St. Regis Hotel (St. Regis) in Yalong Bay. According to the publication, the work was completed six months ahead of schedule.
Municipal authorities also monitor water resources - lakes and rivers within the city limits - once a month. By the end of 2021, 15 wastewater treatment plants were built in Sanya, which treat up to 400 thousand tons of water per day. Similar infrastructure is being built in the countryside as well - at present, water treatment plants process 78.5% of the water used in rural areas.
The authorities also monitor water quality in Dadongkhai and Yalong Bays and promptly respond to fuel leaks, water pollution by waste, silt or red algae. The Jiyang, Yazhou and Haitang districts have a special ecological coastal area of 315,000 square meters. A total of 60 special vessels and 200 cleaners are responsible for its cleanliness, collecting about 40 tons of waste every day.
