Russian oil to be embargoed within nine months, says European Commissioner

Shorter terms would trigger a negative impact on global oil prices, Paolo Gentiloni specified

ROME, May 6. /TASS/. The European Union will fully embargo Russian oil within nine months, European Commissioner for Economy Paolo Gentiloni said in an interview with the Italian newspaper Il Messaggero published on Friday.

"Our proposal is to embargo [oil], depending on the types of petroleum products, within nine months. Shorter terms would trigger a negative impact on global oil prices, which contradicts our goals," he said.

"The decision will affect the European economy," Commissioner noted, adding though that it "will hit the Russian [economy] harder."

Gentiloni admitted that "the decision not to participate directly in the military conflict," but provide support to Ukraine, including through sanctions, "has its economic price."
