Zelensky claims he discussed freezing Ukraine conflict with Trump, Macron

Meanwhile, the Ukrainian president claimed that Russia doesn’t want the crisis to end, urging his allies in the United States and Europe to reinforce Ukraine militarily

MOSCOW, December 9. /TASS/. Vladimir Zelensky claimed that he discussed freezing the conflict in Ukraine during his meeting with US President-elect Donald Trump and French President Emmanuel Macron.

"If we’re talking about freezing the conflict, then yes, we discussed it. I said that we, more than anyone in the world, want [this conflict] to end. […] A diplomatic resolution would undoubtedly save many lives," he said, answering a reporter’s question about what happened at the meeting, according to the Unian News Agency.

Meanwhile, Zelensky claimed that Russia doesn’t want the crisis to end, urging his allies in the United States and Europe to reinforce Ukraine militarily. In addition, Ukraine needs security guarantees to end the conflict. According to Zelensky, the best guarantee would be bringing Ukraine into NATO.

Zelensky, Macron and Trump met in Paris on Saturday. On Wednesday, Trump stated that Ukraine would like to sign a settlement treaty with Russia and called for an immediate ceasefire and the beginning of peace talks. However, Zelensky rejected Trump’s call for an immediate ceasefire.

On December 8, Kremlin Spokesman Dmitry Peskov noted that Russia is open for negotiations on Ukraine, adding, however, that to get the peace ball rolling, Zelensky needs to rescind his own ban on talking with the Russian leadership and resume the dialogue based on the Istanbul agreements, taking new realities on the ground into consideration.

On June 14, Russian President Vladimir Putin stated the preconditions for the settlement in Ukraine. They include the withdrawal of Ukrainian forces from Donbass and Novorossiya, as well as the rejection of Kiev’s NATO membership aspirations. Ukraine must also fully ensure rights, freedoms and interests of Russian-speaking citizens. Russia considers it necessary to cancel all Western anti-Russian sanctions and cement Ukraine’s non-aligned and non-nuclear status.
