The United States is preparing a UN Security Council resolution against the deployment of nuclear weapons in space in connection with allegations that have spread in the US press that Russia is developing anti-satellite weapons. The document could be presented in March, Bloomberg reported citing sources.
The resolution, "would likely reiterate countries’ obligations under the 1967 Outer Space Treaty, which bans nuclear weapons in orbit," Bloomberg said.
According to the report, "The draft is in the early stages and hasn’t been widely circulated, the people said. The Security Council is already set to discuss nuclear disarmament and nonproliferation in a meeting on March 18."
The development of anti-satellite weapons attributed to Russia emerged in the media against the backdrop of an acute internal political struggle in the United States in connection with the upcoming presidential elections in November, as well as failures in the allocation of military assistance to Ukraine by Congress. Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov earlier described the White House's promotion of the "Russian threat" as a gimmick, while Russia’s Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov branded the US assertions a "malicious invention.".
