Israeli military destroys nearly 400 mosques in Gaza — enclave’s media relations agency

The agency stressed that some of the buildings "are more than 1,000 years old"

CAIRO, January 11. /TASS/. Nearly 400 mosques have been fully or partially destroyed by the Israeli military in the Gaza Strip, the enclave’s media relations department said.

According to its information, "the Israeli military has destroyed 140 mosques completely, and 240 - partially, also damaging three Christian churches." The agency added that some of the buildings "are more than 1,000 years old". Mosques and churches in the enclave came under repeated missile attacks and bombardment, with some munitions weighing more than 4.4 tons.

The media relations department slammed the attacks on religious sites as a "blatant violation of international humanitarian law" going against the 1954 Hague Convention for the Protection of Cultural Property. The statement also called on the international community to "immediately intervene, to stop the criminal attacks on mosques and churches" and subsequently "make efforts to rebuild them."

Tensions flared up again in the Middle East on October 7 after militants from the Gaza Strip-based radical Palestinian group Hamas launched a surprise incursion on Israeli territory, killing many Israeli kibbutz residents living near the Gaza border and abducting more than 200 Israelis, including women, children and the elderly. Hamas described its attack as a response to Israeli authorities’ aggressive actions against the Al-Aqsa Mosque on the Temple Mount in Jerusalem’s Old City. Israel declared a total blockade of the Gaza Strip and launched bombardments of the enclave and some areas in Lebanon and Syria, as well as a ground operation against Hamas in the Gaza Strip. Clashes are also taking place in the West Bank.

On December 1, the Israeli army accused Hamas of violating the ceasefire in place since November 24, announcing restart of combat operations in Gaza. The Palestinian authorities blamed the US for the renewed Israeli aggression.
