Key Russian senator holds G7 leaders responsible for Ukraine tragedy

Konstantin Kosachev also criticized a high-ranking US official who at a recent briefing said G7 leaders were gearing up to promote their vision of the world based on the principles of freedom and transparency, and not on coercion

MOSCOW, June 23. /TASS/. A senior Russian senator is blaming the tragedy in Ukraine on the G7 leadership’s irresponsibility and geopolitical selfishness.

"G7 leaders, you are directly responsible for the tragedy in Ukraine, or should I say it is because of your irresponsibility and geopolitical egoism, to be precise," Konstantin Kosachev, deputy speaker of the Federation Council (upper house of Russia’s parliament), wrote on his Telegram channel on Thursday.

He criticized a high-ranking US official who at a recent briefing said G7 leaders were gearing up to promote their vision of the world based on the principles of freedom and transparency, and not on coercion, aggression or spheres of influence, at a summit scheduled to take place in Germany on June 26-28.

"If the authorities in Kiev who, following Maidan, took this power had been promoting the vision of the world based on such principles, peace would have been preserved in Ukraine, while the country itself wouldn’t have been divided into West and East," the Russian senator said.

Ukraine wouldn’t have had any other choice then but to become a free, civilized and democratic country for all its citizens, he added.
