Russian chief sanitary doctor admits emergence of new coronavirus strains in Russia

MOSCOW, May 19. /TASS/. Russia’s chief sanitary doctor Anna Popova admitted on Thursday it is possible that new coronavirus strains will emerge in the country in foreseeable future.

"Possible, of course," she said when asked a respective question by TASS.

It is hardly possible to predict so far whether they will be more contagious or provoke a harder course of the disease, Popova added.

According to data provided by the Federal Service for Surveillance on Consumer Rights Protection and Human Wellbeing as of May 17, the Omicron strain accounted for 99.24% coronavirus cases in Russia, while the Delta strain - for 0.3% of cases.
