Russian director to unveil movie about controversial writer, thinker Limonov in Cannes

The first showing of a promo reel is scheduled for May 17

NEW YORK, May 11. /TASS/. Russian director Kirill Serebrennikov will present his new work-in-progress film Limonov, the Ballad of Eddie about the life and work of Russian writer Eduard Limonov at the Cannes Film Festival, the Variety magazine wrote on Wednesday.

In the movie, Limonov will be played by Ben Whishaw while the part of his wife will be performed by Victoria Miroshnichenko. The first showing of a promo reel is scheduled for May 17. The film is based on the eponymous book by French author Emmanuelle Carrere.

Eduard Limonov was a Russian author and thinker who was born in Dzerzhinsk in 1943, emigrated to the US in 1974 and then lived in various foreign countries. In 1991, he returned to Russia where he was involved in literary and political activity. He died in 2020.

In June 2020, Kirill Serebrennikov was handed down a suspended sentence of three years in the Seventh Studio case by Moscow’s Meshchansky district court. At the end of March, 2022, Moscow’s Khamovniki district court lifted the sentence before the end of the probation period. Following this, the film director left for France.
