Prestigious British college to complete construction of Hainan campus by the end of 2023

HAIKOU, May 16. /TASS/. Dulwich College, a prestigious British school for boys, will complete the construction of a campus in Hainan's Haikou by the end of 2023, reported the provincial authorities.

As noted in the information material published on the website of the Hainan government, investments in an object located on an area of ​​over 228,000 square meters, will amount to 1.4 billion yuan (almost $ 217 million at the current exchange rate). The Haikou college branch will train up to 4,300 people annually.

"The creation of a branch of Dulwich College will have a beneficial effect on expanding the sphere of international cooperation on Hainan and on the dynamic development of Hainan's free trade port," a source in the provincial administration said. According to him, the government intends to form a solid layer of experienced and highly qualified teachers who "will constantly accelerate the development of local general education".  

The authorities have already issued on the Internet images of the buildings and adjacent territories of a branch of a British college, the construction of which is in full swing in the southern part of Haikou near the Fengyi artificial reservoir. According to the pictures, educational buildings and teaching dormitories are planned to be built in Gregorian-style classical architecture. The campus will house a stadium, a library, an international cooperation center and a creative space.

Dulwich College was founded in 1619 and was originally intended to educate a group of children from poor families. This school is believed to provide serious academic preparation for university admissions.

Since April 2018, when Chinese President Xi Jinping announced the creation of a free trade port on the island, the Hainan authorities have registered 36 branches of major Chinese and foreign universities, as well as over 50 prestigious colleges and other educational institutions. Over the past three years, the regional administration has approved about 110 educational programs, starting the implementation of about 400 specialized projects. Among the foreign higher educational institutions that have opened branches on Hainan are Bielefeld University of Applied Sciences (Germany), School of Hotel Management Lausanne (Switzerland), Coventry University (Great Britain), University of Albert (Canada).
