Russia taking steps to prevent Iran situation from escalating — diplomat

Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova expressed hope that "all of Iran's right-minded neighbors" are well aware of this

MOSCOW, April 24. /TASS/. Russia is working hard to prevent a "serious deterioration" of the situation over Iran's nuclear program and warns other states against the use of force, Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said at a briefing.

"Russia is making active efforts to prevent another serious deterioration or a new crisis over Iran and its nuclear program. Our position on this matter has been consistent. We oppose any attempts by certain countries to resolve emerging issues through the use of military force and urge all those who are considering such actions to refrain from them, as it could have grave consequences - or result in turmoil for the entire Middle East, I would even say," the diplomat emphasized.

Zakharova expressed hope that "all of Iran's right-minded neighbors" are well aware of this. "Like us, they have a vested interest in ensuring that the endless escalation of tensions - which the West has been diligently fueling for years under the pretext of some imaginary threats over Iran's peaceful nuclear activity - does not spiral into an open conflict, but is resolved via agreements that duly take into account legitimate rights and eliminate mutual concerns," Zakharova added.

"The Russian side is holding regular and productive discussions with Tehran on the prospect of a settlement around Iran's nuclear program," the diplomat stressed. "The agenda rests on a solid foundation of historical ties along with a multitude of diverse trade, economic, scientific, technical, cultural, humanitarian, and other cooperation projects, which are developing dynamically and meet mutual strategic interests," she concluded.
