MOSCOW, December 20. /TASS/. The UN General Assembly adopting Russia’s resolution on fighting the glorification of Nazism is good news, Kremlin Spokesman Dmitry Peskov told journalists.
"This is very good news and we welcome those who joined this [initiative]," he said, replying to a question on what the Kremlin thinks about the General Assembly’s decision.
The resolution, adopted earlier, was supported by 118 countries with 49 voting against it, including Canada, the US, Ukraine and Japan. Algeria, Bolivia, Brazil, China and Cuba, among others, voted in favor of the resolution.
"This is an extremely important subject, especially for the modern world where we see how neo-Nazis sometimes try to rear their head, how the Nazis of days past are revered in some countries. So adopting such declarations is extremely important," the Kremlin official said.
The document was drafted by Russia, co-authored by several other countries, including Belarus and Syria. Among other things, it includes provisions on the resolute condemnation of any incidents related to the glorification and propaganda of Nazism, the welcoming of efforts on preserving the historical truth and a recommendation to take measures in order to prevent the denial of crimes against humanity or revising history and what happened in the Second World War.
As Russian Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations Maria Zabolotskaya said following the vote, the resolution aims to "directly point to the unacceptability of racist and xenophobic rhetoric, urge to combat manifestations of Islamophobia, Christianophobia, Afrophobia and anti-Semitism which are becoming commonplace in many countries."
