Coal production in Russia rises by 5.4% to 73.7 mln tonnes in first two months of 2025

The extraction of all types of hard coal during the reporting period increased by 4.5% to 56.5 mln tonnes

MOSCOW, March 26. /TASS/. Coal production in Russia rose by 5.4% year-on-year in January-February 2025, reaching 73.7 mln tonnes, according to data from the Russian State Statistics Service (Rosstat).

The extraction of all types of hard coal during the reporting period increased by 4.5% to 56.5 mln tonnes. Anthracite production grew by 1.6% to 3.9 mln tonnes, while coking coal output declined by 3.6% to 17.4 mln tonnes.

According to Rosstat, brown coal production in January-February 2025 reached 17.3 mln tonnes, reflecting an 8.4% increase. The production of other types of hard coal rose by 9.4% to 35.1 mln tonnes.

Additionally, coal output in February 2025 exceeded the levels recorded in February 2024 by 4.6%, reaching 36.2 mln tonnes. Hard coal production increased by 3.4% to 28 mln tonnes, while coking coal output declined by 6.2% to 8.6 mln tonnes. Meanwhile, brown coal production rose by 9.1% to 8.2 mln tonnes. Output of other types of hard coal totaled 17.5 mln tonnes, up 8.8% from the previous year.
