EU purchases of Russian pipeline gas, LNG in January biggest in two years

EU countries paid 1.07 billion euro for Russian LNG, which is 17% higher than in December 2024, and 57% higher than in January 2024

MOSCOW, March 19. /TASS/. In January, the European Union paid 833 million euro for Russian pipeline gas and 1.07 billion euro for Russian liquefied natural gas (LNG), according to Eurostat data and TASS calculations.

The total purchase of 1.9 billion euro in January became the largest in two years.

EU countries paid 1.07 billion euro for Russian LNG, which is 17% higher than in December 2024, and 57% higher than in January 2024. It was the largest sum since January 2023, when Europe paid over 1.3 billion euro for Russian LNG. The main importers are France (455 million euro), Spain (261.5 million euro) and Belgium (256.7 million euro).

Europe also imported Russian pipeline gas worth 833 million euro, which is just 10% lower than in December, despite the total halt of gas transit via Ukraine, and higher than in November and October 2024. At present, the TurkStream gas pipeline remains the only active pipeline delivering Russian gas to Europe.
