Commander hails Russian Navy’s ‘skillful operations’ paving way for Berdyansk’s liberation

Viktor Astapov also commended the marines’ significant role in liberating not only Berdyansk and Mariupol both located on the coast of the Sea of Azov but also other populated areas in Donbass

MOSCOW, November 25. /TASS/. The Russian Navy’s skillful operations helped land an assault force of the Black Sea Fleet and the Caspian Flotilla near Berdyansk on the coast of the Azov Sea and liberate the city during the special military operation in Ukraine, Navy Deputy Commander-in-Chief Lieutenant-General Viktor Astapov said on Friday.

"The Navy’s skillful operations helped deceive the enemy and land an assault force of the marine infantry of the Black Sea Fleet and the Caspian Flotilla in the area of Berdyansk. This helped the Fleets’ basic marine infantry forces advance on the ground to liberate the city," he said in an interview with the Krasnaya Zvezda newspaper on the occasion of the 317th anniversary of Russia’s Marine Corps that will be celebrated on November 27.

The commander also commended the marines’ significant role in liberating not only Berdyansk and Mariupol both located on the coast of the Sea of Azov but also other populated areas in Donbass.

"A fresh example is the liberation of the settlement of Pavlovka in the Donetsk People’s Republic, in which the Pacific Fleet’s marine infantry units played a pivotal role, thus confirming their high level of preparedness and motivation to win," Astapov stressed.

Marine Infantry Day is a professional holiday of the Russian Navy. The holiday has been celebrated annually on November 27 since 1996, and was instituted upon the order of then-Navy Commander-in-Chief Feliks Gromov on December 19, 1995.
