Spanish police detain man suspected of sending letter bombs to Ukrainian embassy

"The alleged sender of the letters, a 74-year-old man, was detained in the city of Miranda de Ebro," the source said

MADRID, January 25. /TASS/. Spain’s law enforcement officers have detained a 74-year-old man suspected of sending letter bombs to the country’s prime minister and the Ukrainian embassy in Madrid, a police source told TASS on Wednesday.

"The alleged sender of the letters, a 74-year-old man, was detained in the city of Miranda de Ebro (in the autonomous community of Castile and Leon)," the source said.

According to the La Sexta TV channel, the letters with explosives were sent in two stages in late 2022. At first, a parcel was sent to Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez by regular mail.

An explosion took place at the Ukrainian embassy in Madrid last year. A letter to the ambassador, which contained an improvised bomb, was opened by an embassy worker who suffered a minor injury to his hand and went to the hospital by himself to seek medical treatment. Similar letters were sent to the Torrejon Air Base, the Instalaza arms manufacturing company, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez and Defense Minister Margarita Robles. A parcel with an explosive device was also intercepted at the US embassy in Madrid.
