At talks with Putin’s envoy, UN chief notes Russia’s contribution to climate dialogue

Both sides expressed their "commitment to discussions on measures to fund developing nations’ efforts to cope with climate change, including by adjusting to its negative effects"

SHARM EL-SHEIKH /Egypt/, November 8. /TASS/. The Russian president’s special envoy on climate issues Ruslan Edelgeriyev, who heads Russia’s delegation to the 2022 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP27), met with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on the sidelines of the event on Tuesday.

According to the Russian special envoy’s office, the sides "addressed the need to step up the effort against climate change, [and] underscored the importance of implementing the Paris Agreement."

"Guterres recognized Russia’s contribution to the global negotiating process, [and] noted the importance of discussing the issue of damage and losses caused by the effects of climate change," the office said in a statement, posted on its website.

The UN chief also "called upon all parties to implement the Black Sea grain initiative in order to avert a global food crisis."

The 27th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP27) officially started its work in the Egyptian city of Sharm El Sheikh on November 6. The schedule of the current forum, set to run until November 18, lists hundreds of events related to the COP27 agenda. During the conference, the Egyptian resort city will welcome over 62,000 delegates representing national governments and international organizations, as well as some 3,000 accredited journalists.
