Belgian leaders skip Trump’s arrival to Brussels as Belgium battles for World Cup final

Trump, as well as other heads of states and governments who arrived to the NATO summit in Brussels, was met by a Belgian Foreign Ministry official

BRUSSELS, July 11. /TASS/. US President Donald Trump’s arrival to the Belgian capital Brussels went largely unnoticed by the country’s leaders, because it coincided with the Belgium-France semifinal of the 2018 FIFA World Cup on Tuesday night, Belgium’s Le soir newspaper wrote.

According to the paper, none of the country’s top leaders met Trump at the airport, because all of them were watching the football match. For example, King Philippe of Belgium with his spouse Queen Mathilde and Foreign Minister Didier Reynders travelled to the Saint Petersburg Arena in Russia, while Prime Minister Charles Michel followed the match at a fan zone in the city of Braine-le-Comte.

Trump, as well as other heads of states and governments who arrived to the NATO summit in Brussels, was met by a Belgian Foreign Ministry official.

The regular NATO summit will be held in Brussels on July 11-12. It will be Trump’s second. During his visit to Brussels last year, Trump was greeted at the airport by the Belgian premier.
