Life expectancy in Russia dips due to coronavirus pandemic, official reveals

As Valeria Gulshina said, Russia needs to preserve at least 116,000 lives of Russian nationals in 2022 in order to be on track and able to achieve this target

MOSCOW, October 19. /TASS/. Russia’s life expectancy shrank by 3.3 years due to the coronavirus pandemic, the Deputy Director of the Health Ministry said on Wednesday.

"According to a presidential decree on the national development goals of the Russian Federation, we must achieve a life expectancy of 78 years by 2030. I regret to say the COVID pandemic slightly put us back and we have lost a total of 3.3 years in life expectancy over the last two years," Valeria Gulshina disclosed.

Because the population’s mortality rate is related to life expectancy, implementing activities aimed at reducing the death rate from primary causes is the main resource in attaining the national life expectancy objective, the official said. "We need to preserve at least 116,000 lives of Russian nationals in 2022 in order to be on track and able to achieve this target," she stressed.
