Enhanced security measures implemented at Kursk nuclear facility, in host town — official

According to Igor Korpunkov, the previous security measures included the establishment of checkpoints along the roads leading into and out of the town

KURCHATOV, March 20. /TASS/. Further comprehensive security measures have been implemented at the Kursk Nuclear Power Plant and in its host town of Kurchatov, Igor Korpunkov, head of the town’s administration, told TASS.

"I would like to point out that the challenging situation in the region has certainly impacted the town and the power plant’s operation. Additional comprehensive security measures have been introduced, and we continue to uphold them," he said.

According to Korpunkov, the previous security measures included the establishment of checkpoints along the roads leading into and out of the town.

The Kursk NPP is one of the largest power generation facilities in Central Russia, which provides electricity to consumers in 19 regions of the country. The power plant consists of three energy blocks equipped with channel reactors with a total capacity of 3 GW. The construction of two energy blocks at the Kursk 2 replacement power plant is currently underway, which will run on a new type of reactor, VVER-TOI. Their design lifetime stands at 60 years and can be extended for another 20 years.
