Lavrov rules out any strategic stability talks in current circumstances

According to Russian Foreign Minister, "the START Treaty is an agreement between Russia and the United States that was signed in quite a different situation in the international arena, when the relationship between Moscow and Washington was different"

NEW DELHI, September 10. /TASS/. It is impossible to hold any negotiations on strategic stability in the current circumstances, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said.

"The START (Strategic Arms Reduction - TASS) Treaty is an agreement between Russia and the United States that was signed in quite a different situation in the international arena, when the relationship between Moscow and Washington was different <…>. In the present circumstances, no strategic stability talks can be held," Lavrov emphasized.

He reiterated that Russia would implement its commitments under START III, mostly on the limits on corresponding weapons, until it expires.

Washington and Moscow inked the New START treaty in 2010. The document stipulates that seven years after its entry into force, each party should have no more than a total of 700 deployed intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs), submarine-launched ballistic missiles (SLBMs) and strategic bombers, as well as no more than 1,550 warheads on them, and a total of 800 deployed and non-deployed ICBM launchers, SLBM launchers and strategic bombers. Russia and the US extended the treaty for a maximum period of five years in February 2021.
