Suspension of opposition parties in Ukraine is worrisome — Russia’s ambassador to UN

Vasily Nebenzya called upon the UN Security Council members to "exercise their influence on the regime in Kiev to ensure Berezhnaya’s freedom and safety"

UNITED NATIONS, March 22. /TASS/. The suspension of a number of opposition parties in Ukraine, including those represented in the Verkhovna Rada, has become "another very alarming trend" in the country’s domestic situation, Russia’s ambassador to the UN, Vasily Nebenzya said in a message to the UN Security Council members. A copy of the letter was obtained by TASS.

Nebenzya says that according to available information Ukrainian radicals have detained hundreds of human rights activists. The Russian ambassador drew attention to the plight of one of them - Yelena Berezhnaya, of the Irina Berezhnaya Institute of Legal Policy and Social Protection. Nebenzya says there is evidence that the human rights activist is kept in custody by the Ukrainian secret service SBU, because she is a firm opponent of ultranationalism in Ukraine.

Nebenzya called upon the UN Security Council members to "exercise their influence on the regime in Kiev to ensure Berezhnaya’s freedom and safety."
