India receives from 1 to 1.4 mln barrels of oil per day from Russia — Indian Oil Ministry

Pankaj Jain explained that there is "some flexibility" in oil supply volumes from month to month

NEW DELHI, March 5. /TASS/. India receives from Russia from 1 to 1.4 million barrels of oil per day out of its total energy imports of 5 million barrels per day, this volume was supplied last year and will be maintained this year, Secretary of the Indian Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas Pankaj Jain told TASS.

"As for volumes, usually last year we received 22%, 25%, 27% from Russia. This year we continue [to receive the same volume]," Jain said. In total, India imported 85 to 88% of its energy last year, he added.

"Out of the 5 million barrels per day that we supply from around the world, approximately 1 to 1.4 million barrels come from Russia. This was the case last year and continues this year," he said.

Jain explained that there is "some flexibility" in oil supply volumes from month to month. "There are ups and downs. We have summer and winter [volumes], in some months we need more [oil], in others less," he noted.

Jain called the information that appeared in a number of Western media about a decrease in supply volumes from Russia unreliable. "They sensationalize some news," he said.

Earlier, in an interview with TASS, Indian Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas Hardeep Singh Puri said that India is always ready to import energy resources from Russia, there is no talk of reducing purchases. According to him, "Russia-India energy trade has always been very positive." Puri said that he once read a headline in the media, "Oil imports from Russia hit all-time low." He stressed that this was "a misleading headline."
