Over 400 aid workers killed in Gaza Strip since start of military operations — UN agency

According to UNRWA Commissioner General Philippe Lazzarini, targeting or endangering emergency responders, journalists or humanitarian workers has become routine in Gaza

UNITED NATIONS, April 1. /TASS/. Over 400 aid workers have been killed since the start of war in the Gaza Strip, Philippe Lazzarini, commissioner general of the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), said.

According to him, a total of 408 aid workers, including 208 UNRWA staff, have been killed in Gaza since October 2023.

"Targeting or endangering emergency responders, journalists or humanitarian workers is a flagrant and severe disregard of international law," Lazzarini pointed out on the X social media platform. "In Gaza, these killings have become routine. This cannot become the new norm. There must be accountability. International humanitarian law applies to all, without exception," the UNRWA chief added.

Tensions flared up again in the Middle East on October 7, 2023, when Hamas militants staged a surprise attack on Israeli territory from Gaza, killing residents of Israeli border settlements and taking hostages. In response, Israel launched air strikes on the Palestinian enclave before starting ground operations in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank.
