Mexico to respond to US tariffs, remains open to dialogue — president

Mexico’s reciprocal steps "are not aimed at economic or trade confrontation," Claudia Sheinbaum noted

MEXICO CITY, March 4. /TASS/. Mexico will impose reciprocal tariffs on goods from the US, though it remains open to finding ways to settlement of the issue through negotiations, the country’s president Claudia Sheinbaum said.

"I would like to clearly announce that we will be always anxious for solution through negotiations, as we suggested, within regard for our sovereignty. However, the unilateral decision made by the United States, affects national and foreign companies operating in our country, and it affects our citizens. This is why we decided to respond with tariff and non-tariff measures," she told a news conference.

Mexico’s reciprocal steps "are not aimed at economic or trade confrontation," the president noted, adding that she would announce specific measures on Sunday.

The White House stated on Monday that the US had started imposing import tariffs on goods from Canada and Mexico that were postponed previously.

On February 1, US President Donald Trump signed a decree raising tariffs on goods from Canada, China, and Mexico. Tariffs in the amount of 10% on Chinese imports came into force on February 4, while tariffs on Canadian and Mexican products were held off for 30 days due to negotiations with those countries’ authorities.
