BRUSSELS, February 11. /TASS/. The European Union (EU) regrets the US decision to impose tariffs on exports of steel and aluminum from Europe, and it will respond with firm countermeasures, European Commission (EC) President Ursula von der Leyen said in a statement.
"I deeply regret the US decision to impose tariffs on European steel and aluminum exports. <…> Unjustified tariffs on the EU will not go unanswered - they will trigger firm and proportionate countermeasures," the statement reads.
"Tariffs are taxes - bad for business, worse for consumers," Von der Leyen stated. "The EU will act to safeguard its economic interests. We will protect our workers, businesses and consumers," she stressed.
On Monday, US President Donald Trump gave instructions to impose tariffs on all imports of steel and aluminum to the country in the amount of 25%. He announced plans to impose tariffs on steel and aluminum on February 9. The EU responded to those statements with confirmed readiness to take countermeasures.
Moreover, Trump warned earlier that the US intended to impose tariffs on supplies of semiconductors, oil, gas, steel, aluminum, and copper. The US president did not specify which countries might be affected.
