Scholz rules out sending German troops to Ukraine

"It is inappropriate to speculate about what may happen later, when a ceasefire and peace are achieved," the German Chancellor told the Bundestag

BERLIN, December 4. /TASS/. German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, after his visit to Kiev on Monday, stated that the possibility of deploying German military personnel to Ukraine was ruled out, and it is also too early to discuss the potential presence of peacekeeping forces there.

"It is inappropriate to speculate about what may happen later, when a ceasefire and peace are achieved," Scholz told the Bundestag. "It is ruled out that we will send troops or German military personnel to Ukraine in the current situation. I have always made this clear, and it remains the case."

Earlier, German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock, speaking at a meeting of NATO foreign ministers in Brussels, categorically did not rule out the possibility of sending peacekeepers from Germany to Ukraine in the event of a ceasefire. She mentioned that, alongside security guarantees in the form of NATO membership, an "international presence to enforce the ceasefire" might be considered.

Baerbock added that Germany "will support with all its might" any actions aimed at achieving peace.

French President Emmanuel Macron said on February 26 that during a meeting of representatives from about 20 Western countries in Paris, the possibility of sending ground troops to Ukraine was discussed. Macron stated that the participants did not reach a consensus, but such a scenario might materialize in the future. Russian Presidential Spokesman Dmitry Peskov warned that the deployment of foreign military personnel in Ukraine would have extremely negative, potentially irreparable, consequences.
