BUDAPEST, November 28. /TASS/. Hungary opposes attempts by the United States and the European Union (EU) to increase arms supplies to Ukraine in the coming months, Gergely Gulyas, minister in charge of the Hungarian prime minister's office, said.
Hungary relies hopes for resolving the conflict in Ukraine on the upcoming return of Republican Donald Trump, whose promise to address the issue was part of his election campaign. "It seems that the current Democratic administration and part of the European leadership want to amplify the risk of escalation of the conflict by any means before the new US president assumes office on January 20," Gulyas said. "The Hungarian government strongly resists obstructing the new US administration's peace policy by increasing arms deliveries" to Ukraine in the upcoming months, Gulyas told journalists, commenting on reports about the intention of US President Joe Biden's outgoing administration to increase military aid to Kiev, as well as plans of the EU leadership to create a new fund to finance arms purchases for Ukraine.
Gulyas added that Hungary would scrutinize all similar proposals put forward in Europe. Budapest has blocked the allocation of funds for arms purchases for Ukraine from the European Peace Fund during the current year.
The Hungarian government discussed the situation in Ukraine at its November 27 meeting and "came to the bitter conclusion that the threat of war escalation is greater than ever," Gulyas noted.
