At least eight people injured in two earthquakes in Turkey — authorities

Antalya’s, Mersin’s and Hatay’s authorities earlier called on people to stay away from the coastline

ANKARA, February 20. /TASS/. At least eight people received injuries in two strong earthquakes in southeastern Turkey, Turkish Vice President Fuat Oktay said on Monday.

"Eight people were wounded. They were taken to hospitals," he said, adding that there are no tsunami threats on Turkey’s Mediterranean coast.

Meanwhile, Antalya’s, Mersin’s and Hatay’s authorities earlier called on people to stay away from the coastline.

According to the CNN Turk television channel, a woman was killed by a piece of concrete that fell down on her head as a result of the quake in the city of Samandag in the Hatay province. It also said that at least four people are under the rubble in the city of Defne.

Turkey’s Emergency Management Agency (AFAD) said earlier that magnitude 6.4 and 5.8 earthquakes rocked southeastern Turkey with an interval of 17 minutes. According to the Habertürk television channel, damage was reported in the city of Defne in the Hatay province. Tremors were felt in Egypt, Israel, Cyprus, Lebanon, and Syria.
