HAIKOU /China/, Oct. 10. /TASS/. Sanya city on the southern coast of Hainan Island will accelerate the implementation of China's strategic programs in three key areas - aerospace technology, deep sea and selective breeding projects in the coming years. This was reported by the Sanya Daily newspaper.

According to the newspaper, the local authorities intend to ensure steady innovative development of these three sectors. In this regard, there are already 322 companies in Sanya related to remote sensing satellite data processing projects. These companies annually produce products and provide services worth 120 million yuan (about $17 billion at the current exchange rate).

In addition, the Yazhou Bay Science and Technology City in Sanya is pursuing an extensive deep-sea research program. In this regard, many Chinese universities and research centers specializing in these issues have recently registered their branches in the city. By June 2023, all of these new entities are expected to be involved in deep water research activities.

"Hainan is engaged in an important program and is creating a 'national team' in ocean science and technology research in accordance with the government strategy," Yu Zhenshan, secretary of the party commission of the deep-sea research innovation platform at Yazhou, said. The core organizations in Sanya will help ensure that the organizations involved have access to all necessary resources and technology, he said.

Sanya is also said to be constantly expanding its seed research and production program, primarily through laboratories at the Yazhou site, where a "Silicon Valley" of selective breeding has been established in recent years. Its main objective is to stimulate the development of modern tropical agriculture and strengthen China's food security. The local high-tech agricultural cluster already has 415 Chinese and foreign seed companies.

Sanya's achievements

In the past two years, the city has made important achievements in seed production, deep-sea projects and aerospace, Sanya Daily reports. In particular, China's manned deep-sea submersible Fendouzhe successfully returned to Sanya in November 2020, after it set a new PRC record for diving to the bottom of the Mariana Trench, descending to a depth of more than 10.9 km.

In October 2021, a breeding laboratory in the Yazhou Bay Science and Technology City announced a new record for rice yield, with two seasons of 23.8 tons per hectare. As for the space program, in March 2022 experts in Sanya successfully received the first data from the Hainan-1-02 satellite.

Sanya is one of the key centers of Hainan's economic development, with the service sector providing a significant part of its income. The island administration plans to turn the city into a leading financial and economic center with advanced infrastructure, which will house the headquarters of major Chinese and foreign companies. This large city, also known around the world as a first-class resort, is transforming itself year after year, attracting the attention of more and more investors.
