Macron tells Zelensky why he opposes saying ‘genocide’ to describe events in Ukraine

The French president said lawyers, not politicians, must determine if the term genocide is appropriate

PARIS, April 15. /TASS/. French President Emmanuel Macron on Thursday said he spoke with Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky earlier that day and told him why he opposes using the word genocide with respect to events in Ukraine.

"I gave him a direct response. We had a phone conversation this morning," Macron said on the France Bleu radio station. The French president said lawyers, not politicians, must determine if the term genocide is appropriate.

"If it’s genocide then the countries that think so must interfere in the situation in accordance with international conventions," he said. "I don’t think people want that."

"One thing is to help and another is to pursue escalation with words that don’t make sense," Macron went on to say.

On Wednesday, Macron said he disagreed with US President Joe Biden who stated that what’s happening in Ukraine seems like genocide to him. French presidential candidate Le Pen also spoke against using the word genocide when referring to the situation in Ukraine.

On February 24 Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a special military operation in response to a request for help by the heads of the Donbass republics. Afterward, the US, EU, UK and some other countries imposed sanctions on Russian individuals and legal entities.
