Lukashenko considers increasing competition between West and China dangerous

Belarusian President drew attention to the EU’s policy, involving the further promotion of "democracy and European values" among eastern countries

MINSK, September 16. /TASS/. Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko believes the intensifying competition between Western states and China poses new threats to the system of international relations, he noted at the meeting of the CSTO Collective Security Council in Dushanbe on Thursday.

"Increased competition between the West and China is the real reason for the breakdown of the system of international relations. In order to enhance its influence in Asia, the European Union has launched a Globally Connected Europe initiative as a project alternative to China’s One Belt One Road," the news agency reported citing the president’s statement.

He drew attention to the European Union’s policy, involving the further promotion of "democracy and European values" among eastern countries. "The nature of these values and democracy has been most visible in the situation in Afghanistan and others," Lukashenko said.

The Belarusian president noted that we would soon mark the 30th anniversary of the signing of the Treaty on Collective Security and the 20th anniversary of the Collective Security Treaty Organization. Hence, the head of state claimed it was necessary to assess the overall activities of the organization. "At least, we should conduct an audit of what has already been done and what is going to be done. Perhaps, we should also set new long-term objectives of CSTO development, which serves as a guarantee and a donor of Eurasia’s safety.
