Russia to successfully implement all Arctic Council programs without West — diplomat

"We are holding dialogue both with Arctic and leading extra-regional countries that adhere to a constructive approach to interaction on high latitudes," Chairman of the Committee for Senior Officials of the Arctic Council Nikolay Korchunov said

MOSCOW, November 12. /TASS/. Russia is successfully implementing all the Arctic Council’s programs even without the participation of Western countries who suspended their activity in the organization, Russian Foreign Ministry Ambassador-at-Large and Chairman of the Committee for Senior Officials of the Arctic Council Nikolay Korchunov said at the Arctic and Antarctic Days in Moscow International Forum on Friday.

"This March, our Arctic Council partners practically suspended the Arctic Council’s activities - this is a leading intergovernmental forum on sustainable development - over events in Ukraine. Yet, despite this, we are successfully implementing our program, the program of chairmanship and planned events, targeting, above all, those goals and tasks that are related to the strategy of the Russian Federation’s Arctic zone development."

The diplomat stressed that "the central priority of Russian policy in the region is sustainable development, that is, the policy which allows to harmoniously combine both social, economic and ecological aspects."

"In order to attain this goal, we are holding dialogue both with Arctic and leading extra-regional countries that adhere to a constructive approach to interaction on high latitudes," he added.
