Russian official clarifies Moscow’s move to clamp down on Western-run social media, NGOs

Nikolai Patrushev added that Russia considered the task of strengthening cooperation among CIS member states in the sphere of information security a priority and offered its partners to adopt its experience to "ensure their own national security and prevent chaos and disorder in the CIS"

MOSCOW, November 3. /TASS/. Russian authorities have updated legislation to better combat outside attempts to destabilize the situation, and this includes stepped up oversight of Western-controlled social networks and media, Russian Security Council Secretary Nikolai Patrushev said Thursday at a meeting with colleagues from CIS countries.

According to him, Moscow believed that the Washington-imposed information security partnership, threatened the sovereignty of CIS countries and facilitates furthering color revolution scenarios. Patrushev recalled how Western-run NGOs, media and social networks tried to destabilize the situation in Russia, Belarus and some Central Asian countries.

"In response to this (attempt to destabilize the situation in Russia - TASS) and as part of the fight against the export of color revolutions, we have implemented the development of a regulatory legal framework at the national level. It is aimed at strengthening control and limiting the work of Western-controlled non-governmental organizations and media and Internet resources," the security chief explained.

Patrushev added that Russia considered the task of strengthening cooperation among CIS member states in the sphere of information security a priority and offered its partners to adopt its experience to "ensure their own national security and prevent chaos and disorder in the CIS".
