Ingushetia’s head announces resignation plans

Yunus-bek Yevkurov said that dissociation of the region’s authorities and the public prompted him to leave the post of the region’s head

MAGAS, June 24. /TASS/. Yunus-bek Yevkurov, who has headed the Russian Region of Ingushetia since 2008, has announced his intention to resign.

"I have made the decision to ask Russian President Vladimir Putin with a request to accept my resignation," he said in an address broadcast by the region’s national TV.

Yevkurov also said that dissociation of the region’s authorities and the public prompted him to leave the post of the region’s head. "Let’s be brave enough to say that we all - the power that I represent, public, religious and other organizations are responsible for our dissociation today. We are all facing a choice, personal interests or interests of our home region and everyone acts in accordance with the upbringing, ideals and notions on the statehood of our region. I call on all invested sides to make their choice, mine has already been made," he said.

He underlined that unity is necessary for the region’s development.

"I have already said that there is a program for the development of our region, there are plans and confidence that these plans are achievable. However, one of the main conditions for that is the unity of our people. I can clearly see that today it is being tested," he explained.

Speaker of the region’s parliament Magomed Yandiyev said that Yevkurov can continue his career in the military sphere. "He worked enough and didn’t have any easy patches. The next one will be the same. He will continue serving in the military sphere," he said, specifying that he had discussed Yevkurov’s resignation with him and was aware of the statement to be made.

Head of the regional government Zyalimkhan Yevloyev said that solving the terrorism problem is one of the main achievements of Yevkurov as the head of Ingushetia.

"This was a very difficult period when he headed [the region]. The first five-six years it was the fight against international terrorism and the dissociation of people. The people were asking the head and the federal center that the killing of people stopped. And the biggest, the most important achievement <…> is that it all stopped under him," Yevloyev said.
