Israel demands release of 11 hostages for 40-day ceasefire in Gaza Strip — newspaper

TEL AVIV, April 1. /TASS/. Israel insists on the release of 11 hostages in exchange for the establishment of a 40-day ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, The Jerusalem Post reported.

According to its security source, the hostages in question are Israeli soldier Edan Alexander, who also holds US citizenship, and ten other living hostages.

In addition, the Israeli side is demanding that the radical Palestinian movement Hamas provide full data on the condition of the remaining hostages in Gaza, the newspaper’s source noted. During the previous ceasefire, Hamas provided only general information about 33 hostages.

During the lull in the fighting, negotiations will be held on the next stages of the military campaign in Gaza and the conditions for ending the conflict, the newspaper's source said. In addition to the release of all hostages, Israel is making a number of demands regarding possible options for ending the fighting, including the establishment of a "security zone" inside the Gaza Strip, the demilitarization of the Palestinian enclave and the expulsion of Hamas members from its territory, The Jerusalem Post said.

So far, Hamas officials have agreed to release only five hostages, a possibility that Israel has rejected, the newspaper emphasized.
