No chance of considering Ukraine’s admission to NATO during conflict — Slovak president

Zuzana Caputova recalled that she was one of the European presidents who most actively supported the idea of granting Ukraine the status of an EU candidate country last year

BRATISLAVA, March 15. /TASS/. Slovak President Zuzana Caputova believes that it is impossible to talk about Ukraine joining NATO as long as the military conflict in that country continues.

"As far as admission to the North Atlantic Alliance is concerned, then the situation is clear to everyone in his right mind: as long as Ukraine is at war, one cannot think about joining [the bloc]," she said in an interview with Czech television on Wednesday. "This stems from Article 5 [of the North Atlantic Treaty] and other prerequisites that the country must fulfill in order to become a member of NATO," Caputova said.

She recalled that she was one of the European presidents who most actively supported the idea of granting Ukraine the status of an EU candidate country last year.

"Ukraine still has a relatively long road ahead [towards full EU membership]," Caputova said.
