Death toll in Iraq ferry sinking exceeds 90 — Interior Ministry

KUWAIT CITY, March 21./TASS/. The death toll in the sinking of a ferry in the Tigris River in Iraq has amounted to 93, Al Arabia TV channel reports referring to the Iraqi Ministry of Interior.

Earlier reports put the death toll at 85. According to Alsumaria TV channel, nine people have been detained on suspicion of being involved in the tragedy. Prime Minister Adel Abdul Mahdi has ordered an immediate investigation into the ferry sinking.

The prime minister has arrived in Mosul, where the tragedy has taken place. He also has declared a day of national mourning for the victims, the Rudaw Television reported.

The ferry sank near Mosul earlier on Thursday. According to early reports, it could have been heavily overloaded. According to Arabic TV channels, between 170 and 250 people could have been on board the ferry with a capacity of 75 passengers. A high death toll may be explained by the fact that most of the victims - children - could not swim, and also by of a strong current.
