Hainan launches freight air route between Haikou and Sydney

The Haikou-Sydney flight became Hainan's second scheduled intercontinental cargo route since the launch of a similar flight between Haikou and Paris

HAIKOU, June 12. /TASS/. A regular intercontinental cargo flight has been launched between the southern Chinese province of Hainan and Australia, reported Nanguo Dushibao newspaper.

On June 9, a Hainan Airlines flight delivered 22.1 tonnes of goods to Australia, marking the opening of a new air route. The route connected Haikou, the administrative center of the Chinese province, with the largest Australian city of Sydney. One way flight lasts 10 hours. The planes will operate round-trip cargo on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Sundays.

Agricultural products will be delivered to Sydney from the tropical island of Hainan. In addition, China plans to send industrial goods through Hainan to Australia from the eastern China region of the Yangtze River Delta (Shanghai and its suburbs) and the southern China Greater Bay region (nine cities in Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao).

The Haikou-Sydney flight became Hainan's second scheduled intercontinental cargo route since the launch of a similar flight between Haikou and Paris. Its opening, the newspaper writes, will make a significant contribution to the development of e-commerce on Hainan and the transformation of this province into a regional logistics hub.

The Chinese authorities intend to turn Haikou into one of the country's international integrated transport hubs within 15 years.
